FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUBJECT: DEMOCRATS BACK ANTONIO AND GUSTAS
DATE: June 5, 2007

Greene County Democrats threw their support behind candidates Evon Antonio for County Treasurer and Terrie Gustas for County Clerk at the party's unofficial convention last week. Two fresh faces on the Greene County political scene, Antonio and Gustas are highly skilled professionals whose distinguished careers dovetail perfectly with the offices they are seeking.

Evon Antonio is currently Principle Budget Examiner for the New York State Division of the Budget, where he has worked since 1984. While rising through the ranks Antonio, a mathematician by training, served as Executive Deputy Director for a division of the Department of Economic Development. With the Greene County economy still ailing, Antonio will bring a new level of professionalism to the County Treasurer's office.

Antonio's background also includes working on the initial staffing plan for the New York State Office of the Medicaid Inspector General. With the county's Medicaid costs soaring, Antonio's experience will serve him well as Treasurer. His long tenure in state government will be an asset to the county as it struggles to keep its Medicaid budget under control.

"By choosing Evon Antonio for our Treasurer County, Greene County Democrats are sending a message: we value professionalism and competence above all else. Evon Antonio's career speaks for itself. He has budget experience, management expertise, he's helped craft legislation, all on a statewide level. We're proud to have Evon Antonio on our ticket," Tom Poelker, Greene County Democratic Party Chairman, said.

Antonio and his wife Sydney have roots in Greene County extending back to 1959. Their daughter Ashley attended Windham Ashland Jewett CS. Until recently, Sydney was the proprietor of Greene County Travel on Main Street, Catskill.

Greene County Democratic Party candidate for County Clerk, Terrie Gustas, brings extraordinary credentials to her candidacy. A Greene County resident for over forty years, Gustas has served as Senior Administrator in nursing homes, a substance abuse program and primary health care center in the Capitol region. She has handled a range of complex budgetary issues and supervised as many as 120 employees.

"You can search long and hard before finding someone with Terrie Gustas' qualifications. She has a deep background as an administrator, strong professional credentials on the financial side and a great feel for the people of Greene County," Poelker observed. Gustas' long, successful career has always been about service to the community.

She played an integral role in opening the Greene County Nursing home in Catskill; she served as President of the Board of Directors of the Hudson Family Hospice and as Chairperson of the Fortnightly Club, Catskill's holiday tree festival.

Typically, Gustas has combined professional attention to detail with her commitment to community service. As Quality Improvement Coordinator at Daughters of Sarah she audited and reviewed medical records; yet at the same time she was deeply involved in supporting legal services for her clients in civil proceedings.

To top it off, Gustas has served on the St. Patrick School Board in Catskill. In 1993, she was elected board president. Her long history as a leader combined with her human touch make Gustas an ideal candidate for County Clerk. "As the campaign develops, I urge Greene County voters to take a long look at the Democratic Party's candidates. I think they'll be as impressed as we were. We're not tapping some old boy network. We're out there recruiting competent people who will keep a professional eye on the taxpayers' money and revitalize our county. We're not interested in nominating insiders with party connections," Poelker explained. "Antonio and Gustas couldn't be more professional, and we're proud that they're running on the Democratic Party line."
